Sue (December)
When I was first diagnosed, I felt fear, fatigue, and uncertainty. I was overwhelmed and sad. I felt apprehensive about treatment, and I kept wondering, What will my outcome be?
Those early days were hard, but I got through them with the support of family, friends, co-workers, caregivers, and God. Prayer, nature, and music gave me comfort. The support of B the Light was immediate and extremely heartwarming in many ways, from donations to building friendships to great programs that continue to support me today.
There were many unexpected moments of kindness and strength throughout this journey, too many to mention. But they have stayed with me. Each one made a difference.
Something I’ve learned about myself during this time is how experiencing the harder days has made me so much more grateful for the great days. I keep reaching for strength and fighting for it.
I’ve developed habits that bring peace and power. Exercise and doing things with friends and family have been important. It matters to me to continue as much as I can, when I can. Two mantras that stay with me are, “I breathe in courage, I breathe out fear,” and “Never give up hope.” Right now, I try to stay active and enjoy my people and every day. There are so many opportunities to enjoy. I rest on the days that are needed, and I definitely try not to sweat the things that don’t really matter.
My perspective on life has definitely changed. So much good has come from this that I never would have entered my mind previously. Everyone has a battle to fight at one time, and one of mine just happens to be living with cancer.
Being a survivor means God has given me more time to enjoy life, family, and friends than I thought possible. I am most grateful.
One thing I wish more people knew is that treatment for even metastatic breast cancer has advanced, with many new options. It is still very challenging, with tough days and setbacks. However, the beauty of good people and programs who truly want to help is amazing and life-saving.
To someone newly diagnosed, I would say: we always hear this, take one day at a time. Sometimes, it’s more like one breath at a time. Tap into your faith and trust God. Look for the beauty in nature and people.
B the Light continues to grow and has so many options that benefit each of us in different ways, from nutrition to exercise to mental health. Sharing the space with incredible women and programs can be a game-changer. I always take away something positive and helpful.
