Connecting and Supporting Survivors
ReLight Retreat
The ReLight Retreat is a collaborative program between B the Light and the New Ulm Wellness Collective. They have teamed up to connect survivors with each other and with resources for mindfulness and healing. This experience has offered so much in the way of support and has created a safe place for this beautiful group of survivors to feel honored and lifted. Our last retreat featured a day of self-care and pampering. Each retreat includes lunch and a time for survivors to visit and enjoy fellowship.
Survival Fitness
Survival Fitness was a concept created by Brandi Toomer, co-owner of the New Ulm Minnesota CrossFit and surgical technologist, and Dr. Cori Jordan, a member of the gym, and board-certified surgeon who specializes in general surgery and breast surgery, and also a board member for B the Light. They then brought the idea to Amber Melby, founder of B the Light as an opportunity to collaborate together to help local survivors in their mental and physical recovery.
Art Therapy
Art therapy is a pilot program offered with the direction of art teacher Bridget Gusso and hosted in the beautiful space at the Grand Center for the Arts.
Throughout three sessions, participants create a concept of an artistic work that encompasses all of the womens' vision, then refine to narrow the design, and the final work is drafted. The time together also allows for comradery and connection in a relaxed environment.
Cooking Beyond Cancer
Cooking Beyond Cancer is a 6 week session cooking course that is offered in a partnership with Chef Aron Bode and Lola - An American Bistro, and Dr. Cori Jordan. Attendees will also receive a gift from Gulden Family Farms.
“Cancer patients and survivors are prescribed a ‘healthy diet’ as part of their care plan and many struggle with implementation. Cooking classes empower cancer patients and survivors by teaching basic culinary skills, dispelling nutrition myths, and breaking down barriers to working with novel ingredients. The shared experience of creating a healthy meal with other survivors serves as a support group that can nourish both the body and the soul.”
-Dr. Cori Jordan
